Seed Care

Seeds carry crops' genetic potential. They are very valuable to growers. They also carry substantial amounts of energy, which makes them highly attractive for pests and diseases.

Seed treatments are chemical or biological substances or physical processes applied to seeds or seedlings. They help to protect the seeds and assure optimum emergence of the crop. Application of a chemical to seeds is a very well-targeted method of reducing pests and diseases' attacks on the growing plant.

Today, Syngenta is the leader in fungicides for seed treatment with the brands DIVIDEND®, MAXIM® and APRON® XL. With the ongoing global introduction of CRUISER® we forecast strong growth of the insecticide business.

How an insecticide can make plants more vigorous

Syngenta’s CRUISER® (thiomethoxam) is the world’s best-selling insecticide seed treatment brand, but recently we have focused attention on an additional effect of this product: plant vigor. Brazilian soybean growers were the first to notice the benefit. Crops grown from seeds protected with CRUISER® were bigger, stronger and greener – and produced higher yields – compared with non-treated crops in a similar pest environment. Seven years of scientific work found the explanation of this “vigor effect”: CRUISER® induces the biosynthesis of specific proteins that defend plants against stress. Plants therefore need less energy to protect themselves and can invest more in healthy growth. Our research into CRUISER® now points the way to a potential new class of vigorinducing compounds.
